Your ads aren't underperforming because of budget

Emma Viteri · July 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Almost every founder who comes to me opens the same way: "We're spending $X a month on Meta and it's just not working. Should we spend more?" It's the most natural question in the world. It's also almost never the answer.

After a decade buying media at Meta and TikTok, here's the pattern I see over and over: the budget isn't the problem. The system the budget runs through is. And more money poured into a broken system doesn't fix it, it just loses you money faster.

Budget is an amplifier, not a fix. It makes whatever you already have, good or bad, happen faster.

So what's actually breaking?

In practice, underperformance almost always traces back to three things. None of them cost more to fix.

What to do instead

The fix is rarely "spend more." It's usually "spend the same, better." Three moves, in order:

More budget is the last lever you pull, not the first. When your gut says something's off with your ads, it usually is, and nine times out of ten it's fixable without spending another dollar. You just have to know where to look.
